That question drove the Bank of Ghana to partner with the IFC in 2015, launching years of work that produced, in November 2019, Ghana's Sustainable Banking Principles. Seven principles now guide every bank — covering environmental risk, clean operations, ethics, gender equality, financial inclusion, resource efficiency, and honest reporting. Five Sector Guidance Notes go deeper — targeting agriculture, construction, manufacturing, oil and mining, and energy, the industries with the biggest environmental footprint. Why does it matter? It stabilises the banking system, attracts global green investment, and shields communities from the damage caused by heavy industry. Seven principles. Five sectors. One goal — a banking system that grows Ghana's economy while protecting its people and its planet.
