In the sixth century, the Byzantine Empire stretched across the Mediterranean, ruled from the magnificent city of Constantinople. Emperor Justinian I dreamed of restoring Rome's glory — and he found his perfect weapon: a brilliant young general named Belisarius. In 530 CE, at the Battle of Dara, Belisarius outsmarted a massive Persian army using clever troop formations and cavalry traps. Justinian then sent Belisarius to North Africa, where he crushed the Vandal Kingdom and recaptured the ancient city of Carthage. Next came Italy and the Gothic War. Belisarius captured Rome and defended it against overwhelming Gothic forces for over a year. Though often betrayed and denied resources, Belisarius never lost a battle he commanded — a legend unmatched in the ancient world.
