One of the biggest questions young adults face is this: can I actually afford to move out and live on my own right now? To answer that honestly, we can't just look at today's numbers — we need to think about how our finances will change over the next five years. We start with three key values: a monthly income of two thousand eight hundred dollars, rent of one thousand four hundred dollars, and other expenses of nine hundred dollars. Now we build a mathematical model. Income grows at two percent per year, rent grows at four percent per year, and other expenses also grow at two percent per year. The critical difference is right here — income grows at only two percent, while rent grows at four percent, meaning rent is pulling away from income every single year. Putting all three equations together gives us a complete picture of our financial future — and helps us decide whether moving out is truly affordable over time.
