CyberDrill: AI-Assisted Cybersecurity Vulnerability Remediation Training

Inside modern organizations, cybersecurity teams work around the clock — managing incidents, closing tickets, applying system updates, and keeping operations running under constant pressure and tight deadlines. When a vulnerability scanner flags an issue, the employee follows a standard procedure to fix it — but often without truly understanding the root cause, why the fix works, or how to confirm the vulnerability is actually gone. Conventional cybersecurity training exercises can demonstrate vulnerabilities, but they rarely offer a fully integrated process for individualized remediation practice, automated validation, and continuous personalized feedback. This reveals a critical gap: there is a clear difference between knowing a vulnerability exists and actually demonstrating the practical ability to understand, remediate, and verify it in a real scenario. Our project team identified this gap and developed DefenseDrill — an AI-assisted platform designed to bridge theory and practice through structured, hands-on vulnerability remediation training and skills assessment. In DefenseDrill, a trainee is placed inside a controlled vulnerable environment and guided through a clear workflow: Detect, Investigate, Understand, Propose a Fix, Apply It, Verify the Result, and Receive Feedback — all supported by an AI assistant. The system independently re-scans the environment to validate whether the fix was successful, then delivers a score, detailed feedback, and a full drill history — giving organizations clear visibility into each individual's practical cybersecurity capabilities.
