“Over three days in Barcelona, people from different backgrounds gathered around a shared table and a shared question. What happens when the systems we all depend on become increasingly complex, but the people affected by them cannot easily see, understand, or influence the terms?” “The contract began dense and opaque — full of clauses, symbols and uncertainty. And that made the central question unavoidable: who gets to understand the terms, who gets to shape them, and who gets to verify whether they are actually being honoured? Because when terms are difficult to understand, it becomes harder to question them, negotiate them, or change them.” “The first day explored AI for Development and Impact: how new capabilities can become genuinely useful in real contexts. But it also exposed a familiar problem. Local experience, institutional knowledge, research and data can remain separated, even when a real decision depends on all of them at once.” “AI can help connect these sources and improve a real decision. But a confident answer is never enough on its own. People still need to examine the evidence, interrogate the assumptions, understand the context, and exercise their own judgement before acting. The point is not simply to produce an answer, but to make better decisions.” “The second day shifted the question from what these capabilities can do to who owns them, who governs them, and who captures the gains. Ownership is not only a title. It is a bundle of rights over decisions, benefits, appointments, sale and mission. And shared ownership brings its own practical questions: how do principles hold when capital, competition and scale create real constraints?” “Trusted commerce brought the third theme into focus. A product, a material or a commercial claim becomes more meaningful when its origin can be traced, its evidence can be checked, and its status can be verified. And trust cannot mean simply accepting a claim: there must also be a way to challenge it, correct errors, and update the evidence when conditions change.” “Across tools, tribe and trust, the same thread kept returning: systems become more meaningful when people can understand them, scrutinise the information behind them, have a meaningful voice in shaping them, and remain able to challenge the decisions they produce. The contract that connects all of this is not finished. It remains on the table, and many hands are still writing it.”
