Something occurred to me recently that I honestly had never thought about before — friendship kind of goes around in a circle. When you're a kid, absolutely everything about your social life has to be carefully scheduled and organized for you by your parents. Birthday party? Your parents send out invitations a whole month early, complete with RSVPs, drop-off times, pickup times, and of course, cake. But then you get older, and finally you have real freedom. Nobody is scheduling your social life for you anymore — you're in charge. You just call your friends, you go somewhere together, you figure it all out spontaneously as you go — it's wonderfully simple and effortless. And then apparently, once you hit middle age, you find yourself right back where you started — except now you are the parent sending the formal invitation. Dear friend, you are cordially invited to Buffalo Wild Wings this Sunday from three to six PM. Please RSVP by September first. Adults, we need supervision too.
