Let's begin with sperm and ovum formation. In the testis, spermatogonia divide and mature into spermatozoa. In the ovary, oogonia develop into a secondary oocyte, each gamete carrying half the genetic material needed for a new human being. Next, ovulation releases the oocyte into the fallopian tube. Sperm travel upward through the uterus, meeting the oocyte in the ampulla. Fertilization occurs, the sperm penetrates the egg, and their nuclei fuse, forming a single-celled zygote on day one. The zygote undergoes cleavage divisions, becoming a solid ball called the morula by day three. By day five, it hollows into a blastocyst with an inner cell mass and trophoblast. Around day six to seven, implantation begins into the uterine wall.
