Plants are amazing food factories — and photosynthesis is how they make their own food. First, roots absorb water from the soil and send it up through the stem. Meanwhile, tiny pores on leaves called stomata pull carbon dioxide from the air. Sunlight hits the leaf and gives the plant the energy it needs to start the reaction. Inside the leaf, water and carbon dioxide combine using that sunlight to produce glucose — the plant's food. Oxygen is released as a byproduct — the very air we breathe. Plants feed themselves and keep us alive!
