Plants are like tiny food factories, and they make their own food using sunlight! First, the roots soak up water from the soil and send it up to the leaves. Next, tiny holes in the leaves called stomata pull in carbon dioxide from the air. Inside the leaf, sunlight powers a reaction that mixes water and carbon dioxide together. This creates glucose — a sugar the plant uses as food to grow and stay healthy. As a bonus, the plant releases oxygen — the fresh air that we breathe every day!
