Ten thousand students, hundreds of teachers, millions of grades — how do you design a system to manage all of that? Users interact through a web or mobile app, which sends requests through an API layer. An authentication service checks who you are and what you're allowed to do — students, teachers, and admins all have different permissions. Behind the API sits a backend server, and beneath that, a relational database storing students, courses, enrollments, assignments, and grades. A cache layer reduces database load for frequent requests, and a notification service sends grade updates and assignment reminders. Good system design starts with understanding your users, then building the architecture and data model that supports them.
