Kidney stones are not just an adult problem — they can affect children too, and that might surprise many parents. When a child is diagnosed with a kidney stone, our first priority is to fully understand the stone itself and what may have caused it to form. We usually begin with an ultrasound scan, which allows us to examine the stone clearly and safely, without exposing the child to any radiation. A paediatric urologist — a specialist in children's urinary systems — then steps in to discuss the findings and carefully guide the right treatment plan. At the same time, a paediatric nephrologist investigates the root causes by running detailed urine and blood tests on the child. Treating the stone is only part of the journey — what truly matters is discovering why it formed in the first place so we can address the underlying cause. By understanding the cause, we can give children and their families the knowledge and tools they need to help prevent kidney stones from ever coming back.
