Deep in Latin American folklore lingers one of the scariest mythical creatures ever told: La Llorona, the Weeping Woman. Legend says she was once a beautiful woman named Maria, deeply in love, but betrayed and heartbroken by her husband. In a fit of grief and madness, Maria drowned her own children in the river, instantly regretting her terrible act. Overcome with sorrow, she drowned herself too, but heaven refused her entry until she found her lost children. Now her spirit wanders riverbanks forever, crying out 'Ay, mis hijos!' — 'Oh, my children!' — searching endlessly in the dark. Parents still warn their children: stay away from rivers at night, or La Llorona might mistake you for her own. To this day, her cries echo through the night, making La Llorona one of the scariest mythical creatures ever feared.
