NIDO–Gambia vs. The Nigerian Community: Two Roles, One People

Full transcript

Is NIDO–Gambia the same as the Nigerian Community? Why do we need both, and why are ethnic communities calling for the Nigerian Community to continue? NIDO connects Nigerian professionals and entrepreneurs abroad to support Nigeria's development. This call for a Nigerian Community does not mean abolishing NIDO—its purpose deserves respect. The Nigerian Community focuses on welfare, giving ethnic associations a platform to cooperate. Regardless of tribe or language, we are all Nigerians, and this community belongs equally to everyone. One connects the diaspora to national development; the other represents Nigerians in the host country. Overlapping activities don't make two organisations the same. No ethnic association should feel its voice is lost. Accountability and transparent leadership unite associations without erasing their identities—unity does not mean uniformity. The concern is that the Nigerian Community's role has been absorbed into NIDO. Ethnic communities seek an independent platform that cooperates with NIDO—this is institutional clarity, not hostility. Let us remember: the objective is not to abolish NIDO. It is not to create division among Nigerians. The objective is to ensure that the Nigerian Community in The Gambia continues to exist as a collective platform that belongs to all Nigerian ethnic communities and serves the common interests of Nigerians living here. NIDO has its role. The Nigerian Community has its role. Two distinct purposes. Two complementary institutions. One shared commitment to the Nigerian people. Let us choose unity, fairness, inclusion and cooperation. Thank you.
