Oxidation is a process in which a substance loses electrons. Reduction is a process in which a substance gains electrons. Remember OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain. In a redox reaction, zinc loses electrons to copper ions, so zinc is oxidized and copper is reduced. Oxidation numbers track these electron changes using simple rules for every atom. An increase in oxidation number means oxidation; a decrease means reduction. The oxidizing agent accepts electrons, while the reducing agent donates them, completing every redox reaction we study.

Oxidation and Reduction: Understanding Oxidation Numbers was created with Whiteboard Video Maker, the AI doodle video maker that turns any prompt, PDF, Word document, image or URL into an engaging whiteboard animation video — complete with AI script, hand-drawn illustrations and a natural voiceover.
