In ABA, pairing means becoming associated with fun and reinforcement — so the client actually wants to be with you. Here's what NOT to do: a child plays happily with a toy car, and the therapist takes it, saying 'Time to work.' That breaks trust immediately. The therapist becomes a signal for losing preferred items — not someone to approach. Instead, observe what the child enjoys. Then join the play without taking over — let the child lead. Over time, signs of rapport appear: the client approaches you, stays close, or brings you items to share. Remember: Observe. Join. Engage. Make every interaction with you genuinely valuable.
