SDMU: The Complete Life Cycle of a Satellite

Full transcript

A rocket launches Earth's satellite skyward, reaching orbit insertion and settling into a stable low Earth orbit. The satellite travels smoothly around our planet, solar panels powered, communicating normally, completing its operational mission across many steady orbits. Mission complete — the satellite powers down into safe sleep mode, drifting quietly instead of falling. Zooming closer reveals the SDMU, the Satellite Deorbiting Maneuvering Unit, activating on command as its cover opens to show folded reflective foil tucked neatly inside. Small deployable booms extend outward, unfolding the foil step by step from folded to partially deployed to fully deployed, forming one large reflective sail. Sunlight reflects gently off the surface, producing subtle solar radiation pressure, while in low Earth orbit the larger area creates far more atmospheric drag, driving faster orbital decay. Time accelerates as the orbit visibly shrinks, from a higher orbit down to a lower orbit, and finally onto a re-entry trajectory, altitude steadily falling. The satellite sinks into denser atmosphere, heating and breaking apart as a clean scientific illustration. Mission complete — SDMU: monitor, predict, deorbit — leaving Earth's orbit clear and empty.
