The actual fall of the Roman Empire wasn't one dramatic collapse. It was centuries of slow decay, hidden beneath a mask of strength and glory. The empire grew too vast to defend. Its borders stretched across three continents, forcing legions to spread thin, exhausted, and vulnerable to attack. Inside, the economy crumbled. Emperors debased the coins, inflation soared, and heavy taxes crushed farmers, merchants, and ordinary citizens struggling to survive. Political chaos followed. Emperors were assassinated one after another, the throne bought, sold, and fought over in endless, bloody civil wars. Eventually, Rome split into East and West. The wealthier East thrived, while the West grew weaker, poorer, and increasingly ungovernable. Germanic peoples weren't just invaders—they migrated, served in Roman armies, and slowly filled the power vacuum Rome itself had created. In 476 AD, there was no final battle. A Germanic general simply removed the last western emperor—and the actual fall of Rome ended quietly, not with fire, but with silence.
