Imagine finding a game that people played almost 2,000 years ago… but nobody knows how to play it. That is exactly what happened with a strange piece of limestone found at an ancient Roman town in what is now the Netherlands. The stone had a bizarre pattern of carved lines. At first, nobody could even be sure it was a game board. Then archaeologists noticed something strange. Some lines were much more worn than others — almost as if game pieces had repeatedly moved across them. They had the board. They had the wear marks. But they didn't have the rules, only that this blocking idea fits the ancient wear marks surprisingly well. So researchers tried something unexpected. They used AI to simulate possible games on the ancient board. Two AI players played again and again using different possible rules. The researchers then asked one question: Which rules could create wear patterns like the real stone? One possibility kept making sense — a blocking game, where each player tries to stop the other from moving. It doesn't prove those were the exact original rules, only that this blocking idea fits the ancient wear marks surprisingly well. But after nearly 2,000 years, archaeology and AI may have given us a glimpse of how this forgotten Roman game could have been played.
