Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president, was a towering Pan-African leader who was overthrown in a military coup in 1966. After the coup, Nkrumah went into exile in Guinea, hosted by President Sékou Touré. While in exile, he developed a serious illness — skin cancer — which gradually weakened him. He traveled to Bucharest, Romania, seeking medical treatment at a specialist clinic. Despite the doctors' efforts, Nkrumah's condition worsened and he passed away on April 27, 1972. He was 62 years old. His legacy as the father of African independence lives on forever.
