The large intestine is located at the end of the digestive tract, after the small intestine. Its main parts are the caecum, appendix, colon, rectum and anal canal. The colon itself has four parts: ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid colon. As waste moves through the colon, water and mineral salts are absorbed into the blood. The remaining material becomes faeces, which is formed, stored in the rectum, and later eliminated through the anal canal. Intestinal bacteria help break down remaining material and produce some vitamins. For exams, remember the parts in order, their functions, and the roles of absorption, bacteria and elimination. That completes our revision of the large intestine.
