The Safe Account Scam

Sarah is at home one evening when her phone buzzes with a text message that appears to come from her bank, warning her that suspicious activity has been detected on her account. Before she has had a moment to think, her phone rings. The man on the other end sounds calm, professional, and completely convincing — he says he is calling from the bank's fraud department. He already seems to know details about her — her name, her account type — and he tells her reassuringly that criminals are actively trying to steal her money right now. Then comes the dangerous moment. He tells her she must move her money immediately — right now — into a so-called safe account that he will provide for her. Stop. That urgency is the red flag. No genuine bank will ever contact you and ask you to move your money to keep it safe — that instruction is the scam itself. End the call. Do not use any number they offer you. Instead, contact your bank independently using the number printed on the back of your bank card or through its official app. A convincing voice does not prove who is calling.
