Paris, 1880. On the cobblestone streets of the French capital, horse-drawn carriages passed beneath gas lamps, and life moved at its familiar pace — entirely unaware of a mystery unfolding inside a nearby hospital. Inside the hospital, a 43-year-old woman sat quietly on the edge of an iron bed. She was thin, with dark hair loosely pinned back, wearing a plain white nightdress. She had not eaten in days, and she refused to speak to most people around her. A physician named Jules Cotard entered the room. He was around forty years old, with neatly combed dark hair, a short mustache, and a dark waistcoat. He carried a notebook, sat across from the woman, and began to listen carefully to what she had to say. The woman told Cotard something extraordinary. She believed her organs were gone. She believed her brain had stopped working, that her nerves had disappeared, and that her soul no longer existed. As she spoke, Cotard wrote every word down in careful detail. Cotard held up a small mirror. The woman looked directly at her own reflection — she could see her hands, her face, her eyes looking back at her. She was physically present, visibly alive. And yet she remained completely convinced that she did not truly exist. She could walk. She could speak. She moved through the hospital corridors like anyone else.
