Every time you type a website address into your browser, something incredible happens behind the scenes to connect you to the right place on the internet. The internet actually uses numbers called IP addresses to identify every single device and server, but humans find it much easier to remember names like google dot com. DNS, which stands for Domain Name System, acts like a giant phone book for the internet, translating human-friendly domain names into machine-readable IP addresses instantly. When you enter a web address, your computer first asks a nearby DNS resolver server if it knows the answer, and if not, that resolver begins a journey to find out. The resolver travels up through a hierarchy, first asking a root server, then a top-level domain server, and finally an authoritative name server that holds the definitive answer. The correct IP address is returned to your browser in milliseconds, your computer connects to the right server, and the website loads — all before you even notice it happened.
