Negative times negative equals positive. You probably memorized that rule. But why is it actually true? Instead of memorizing it, let's actually see what the negatives are doing. Start with a number line. Three times two equals six. Multiplying by a positive moves you forward along the line. But negative three times two equals negative six. A negative sign reverses the direction. Now add a second negative. It flips the direction one more time — back to the right. Two reversals bring us back to positive. And that's why a negative times a negative is positive.
