Why Kosovo Exists: The Story of a Divided Land

Kosovo exists because it is home to a majority ethnic Albanian population who lived under Serbian rule for centuries, creating deep tension between two very different national identities. Throughout the twentieth century, Serbia considered Kosovo part of its historic heartland, while ethnic Albanians increasingly demanded self-rule, sparking decades of political unrest and growing resentment. In the late 1990s, violence erupted as Serbian forces cracked down on Kosovo Albanians, leading to a brutal conflict marked by killings and mass displacement of civilians. In 1999, NATO launched airstrikes against Serbia to stop the violence, forcing Serbian troops to withdraw and placing Kosovo under United Nations administration. For nearly a decade, Kosovo was governed by the UN while its final political status remained unresolved, as talks between Serbia and Kosovo Albanians repeatedly failed. On February 17, 2008, Kosovo's leaders declared independence from Serbia, officially breaking away and establishing itself as its own sovereign nation. Today, over a hundred countries recognize Kosovo as independent, but Serbia, Russia, China and others refuse to, leaving its international status only partially recognized.
