Why We Eat So Fast

Have you ever looked down at your plate and realized your food was already gone, even though you barely remember eating it? You are definitely not alone in this habit. One of the biggest reasons we eat fast is stress. When we feel anxious or overwhelmed, our bodies go into a fight-or-flight mode that makes us rush through everything, including our meals. Distraction is another huge factor. When we eat while watching screens or scrolling through our phones, our brain is not focused on the meal, so we eat faster without even noticing. Skipping meals during the day also causes fast eating. When you arrive at dinner absolutely starving, your body sends powerful hunger signals that make it nearly impossible to slow down and eat calmly. Childhood habits also play a surprisingly strong role. If you grew up in a household where meals were rushed or you competed with siblings for food, your brain learned that eating fast was simply normal behavior. Eating too fast has real consequences for your health. Your brain needs about twenty minutes to receive the fullness signal from your stomach, so fast eaters almost always overeat before they even realize they are full. The good news is that slowing down is a learnable skill. Try putting your fork down between bites, taking deep breaths, and removing screens from the table — your body and digestion will genuinely thank you for it.
