Why We Know More About Space Than Our Own Ocean

Here's a surprising fact: humans have explored more of outer space than the deep ocean right here on Earth, and the main reason is that the deep ocean is incredibly difficult and dangerous to reach. As you dive deeper into the ocean, water pressure increases dramatically — at the deepest points, it reaches over a thousand times the pressure we feel at the surface, enough to crush most vehicles instantly. Add to that total darkness, near-freezing temperatures, constant corrosion from saltwater, and the fact that GPS and radio signals simply cannot penetrate deep seawater, making navigation and communication extremely difficult. Spacecraft, by contrast, travel through near-vacuum, where there is almost nothing pushing against them. Radio waves travel freely across vast distances, and engineers can track and communicate with probes billions of miles away. It is also important to clarify that humans have not physically traveled through most of space either — but we can observe, photograph, and study distant galaxies and planets using telescopes far more easily than we can physically reach the ocean floor. So the deep ocean remains one of Earth's greatest frontiers — not because we lack curiosity, but because nature has made it extraordinarily hard to explore, arguably harder than sending a probe to another planet.
