Writing Strong Introductions & Conclusions

You've done the research, you've gathered the facts, and now it's time to turn all of that hard work into a real essay. Two parts matter most: your introduction and your conclusion — the beginning and ending of your reader's journey. Let's start with the introduction. Your introduction has three jobs, and you can remember them with just three letters: H, M, and P — Hook, Main Idea, and Preview. That's it! First, the Hook grabs your reader's attention and makes them want to keep reading. Try a surprising fact or a bold question — something that makes your reader think, wow, I need to know more about this. Next, your Main Idea tells the reader exactly what your research is about — no mystery, no guessing. Then your Preview gives them a quick sneak peek at the key points your essay will explain. Now let's talk about the conclusion. Your conclusion shouldn't just stop — it should leave your reader with something to think about. Remember four letters: R, S, W, and C. R is Restate your main idea in a fresh way. S is Summarize your key points quickly. W is Why it matters — zoom out and show the bigger lesson. And C is your Closing Thought, a strong final sentence your reader will remember. So here's the big picture: H-M-P gets your reader in, and R-S-W-C sends them out strong. Hook it, tell it, preview it — then restate, summarize, explain why it matters, and close with something memorable. You have got this!
